At GlimmerGlass Alpacas, we offer our clients the opportunity to learn about the day to day activities that they will be required to know to effectively care for their alpacas. Nail trimming, giving shots, weighing adults and crias as well as the mundane chore of "scooping poop"! We've been involved in the day to day business of alpaca farming for 10 years and have developed time saving techniques that we are happy to share with new breeders. Many new alpaca owners have never been involved with any other livestock and may be intimidated by the prospect of handling their alpacas once they are at home. We'll help you work through this transition by giving you the tools and the knowledge you need to become an effective and efficient alpaca rancher.
Shearing
The time of year that often produces the most anxiety for new breeders is in the spring - shearing time! At GlimmerGlass Alpacas, we’ve worked with professional shearers and, for the last 3 years, have done our own shearing. For those owners who would like to learn how to shear their own alpacas, we offer the opportunity to work with us so that you can learn to feel comfortable shearing with electric shears and also hand shears. We will show you different systems of restraints that will decrease shearing “stress” for the alpaca and the shearer!
Fiber
You’ve sheared your alpacas and have a barn full of fabulous fiber. NOW WHAT? We can help you learn to prepare your fiber for the mill, decide on end product use, or get you started spinning your own yarn! With many years experience working with fiber, there’s nothing I enjoy more than sharing that experience with other breeders.
