The type of alpaca you choose to purchase is often a matter of personal preference. The huacaya is the alpaca familiar to most people. It's fiber is soft, crimpy and stands out from the body of the alpaca in a fluffy cloud. It's also the most numerous. The huacaya comes in a multitude of natural colors (22 variations) and patterns. The yarn that is spun from the fiber of the huacaya is particularly well suited for knitting into beautiful soft garments. The elegant suri alpaca is very rare. The numbers of suris worldwide are declining and organizations like The Suri Network are actively working to promote and support this unique type of alpaca. The fiber of the suri is quite different from the huacaya. It grows from the body of the suri in long locks that hang parallel to the body of the alpaca. It's most distinctive feature is luster - the shine that is apparent on every suri - often compared to silk in appearance. Suris also are found in a range of 22 natural colors and many different patterns.
