How many alpacas to start?

This number is really determined by the amount of investment you have available. If you are planning a breeding program, it's best to start with bred females. Most breeders offer another breeding following the birth of the cria so essentially you are buying 3 alpacas with your purchase of the bred female (the female, the baby she's carrying, and the cria produced from the rebreeding after the birth of the first baby)! Since these alpacas will be the foundation of your herd, it's important to buy the best quality alpacas that you can afford. Just remember, in addition to buying alpacas, you'll need to have enough money to put up a structure, fences, purchase equipment as well as develop a website and other marketing tools. Female alpacas can be purchased for prices that range from $10,000 to $30,000 and more - depending on factors such as bloodlines, show records and quality of fiber.
