Do I need a farm store?

I think that anyone who raises alpacas should have something on the farm that they can show to people who visit that demonstrates the unique and wonderful qualities of alpaca fiber. It doesn’t have to be a lot of things but they should be of high quality. For new breeders, having items to sell to farm visitors will often provide a source of income that will help offset the expenses in those first few years until you start making alpaca sales. This can be a very lucrative part of your business. Products are available through the AFCNA as well as a multitude of other companies. If nothing else, have your fiber spun into yarn and ask a willing knitter to knit a few wonderful products for you! There’s nothing more exciting than to be able to offer products made from yarn from your own alpacas!

Having a plan can be a significant advantage when “getting into” alpacas! Despite the "cute" factor, alpaca farming is a business and needs to be approached as such. Enlist the help of an experienced business professional to help with the legal and accounting aspect. They can advise you as to the most advantageous way to structure your business and keep you apprised of the many tax advantages associated with alpaca ranching.

There are many advantages to working with an experienced alpaca breeder as you make your initial investment in your foundation stock. They can help you select the animals that will best suit your plan and will give you a solid return on your financial investment. They should be willing to help you learn the ins and outs of day to day management and be available to provide advice and support long after your initial purchase has been completed.

Locate a veterinarian (or two!). It’s always a good idea to have a backup. It’s terrific if you can locate a vet with experience in camelid medicine - if this isn't possible in your location, you should try to find a vet with large animal experience who is willing to learn about alpacas from experienced professionals in veterinary medicine.

Learn! Be willing to educate yourself - there are lots of seminars and courses available that will teach you about all aspects of farm management. Read! We can't always attend every event but we can learn a tremendous amount from those experienced individuals who are willing to share their knowledge. Articles are available in print and online.

Have fun! Alpacas are a journey and along the way you'll meet lots of terrific people and have an opportunity to grow and learn in ways you’d never dreamed possible. Enjoy the ride!
