GlimmerGlass Alpacas has been in the business of raising alpacas in upstate New York since 1996. Our herd, and our focus, has changed a great deal since then. The most obvious change is that we now have 45 alpacas, not 5. We also have suris. Those elegant creatures with flowing locks that glisten - even after a good dust bath! We strive to improve each generation born on our farm. Not always an easy task but one that now comes with scientific data to help us find those males worthy of siring next year's babies.
We find that we don't do as many halter shows any more - but fleece shows - right up my alley!! It's an opportunity to receive an opinion about an integral part of our breeding program - the fleece - without leaving home or leaving home with alpacas. I'm ok with that.
Our breeding program now focuses on fiber. That's not to say that we ignore conformation - we don't. It takes a well conformed animal to have a long , productive career in the breeding barn. One of our girls will be 20 years old this year and she's a fine example of breeding longevity. My point is this. Fiber is what alpacas do best. We choose to identify those individuals in our breeding program with desirable fiber attributes, and use them to improve the rest. All alpaca fiber is usable but the world market pays a premium for fine, consistent fiber. It only makes sense to work to that end.
Having said all that, alpacas are wonderful, loveable critters. They brighten my day. They're easy to care for, don't cause much trouble and provide us with a seemingly endless supply of warm, light wool.
